Journey of Elania, Kino’s journey, Higurashi Gou: Anime first impression

It’s been awhile since I did a first impression post, so let’s get this post started…or restarted.

From adventuring witches, to talking motorrads and horror villages

It’s been awhile since I did a first impression post, so let’s get this post started…or restarted. Also I’m kind of in two minds, this format works as it broadens my viewing, whether it is in season or not. However, at the same time, I want to make a separate type post that just focuses on seasonal shows. Whilst leaving this for out of season shows. I’ll see.

The prodigious witch Elania

Pretty good start, that left me wanting to see where Elania will end up next and the stories that will be told. I really enjoyed the first and third episodes, in comparison to the second which I found pretty tame. I could see why the second episode is tame, it had this really preachy tone to it. The moral to the 2nd epi – you’re never alone, for someone will always be with you, wherever you go in life, pretty fluffy stuff. As Elaina noted at the end of episode. The first episode had a really nice introduction to Elaina. A lead that came off as superior with no flaws, but ends up finding out they are just as flawed, who worked hard to get where they at. The real steal for me is episode 3.

Holy crap, did episode 3 make me do some retake on them. Episode 3 is split in to two different vignettes. And they’re both dark. The first one is about a brother wondering what happened to his sister and flowers that kill. Not going to spoil it, but I didn’t get the ending at first, so I read some comments left to get the gist of what happened, I think the moral is, leave a threat alone long enough, and it might just come back to bite your ass. And that story is really quick. The second story in episode 3. Damn, did that make me think. I also wish the father gets his comeuppance. A young slave girl is abused, whilst the son wants her to be happy. That’s all I’m going to say. To put it in a way, if you enjoyed Kino’s journey, then journey of Elania (with a dose of flying witch) is something that will appeal to you. I’m certainly seeing how her adventures go.

How Kino’s adventure goes

In lieu of giving my first impressions on journey of Elania, I thought I’d do Kino’s too as it is kind of similar to it. I’ve always had this on my watch list and didn’t really get around in to watching it. Now I do. Well what can I say; the first episode goes off with a bang, quite literally as it delves right in to what could be seen as a dubious area of morality. When I first saw the first episode and the country Kino went in to, it gave off this old western town. Right off the bat the dubious area is that you can kill. At least that’s what it sets up right at the beginning of the episode. However, as the episode progressed, it explained why (I did have to double check as I was unsure at first) the moral story behind the first episode is called that. Essentially, mob rules. You behave, you’re fine. You come to kill in cold blood. You die. I did find the two characters at the beginning and at the end were very contrasting to each other. One looking for trouble, the other looking for peace.

I wasn’t too fond of the second episode. Having characters yield to Kino, then to sink the entire country by killing each other, doesn’t that make yielding to Kino meaningless?. To be fair can’t blame Kino. The country has decayed to such a point, that it is beyond saving. Also, I think it was to get a measure of revenge for a couple Kino came across. Watching the episodic nature is very much like journey of Elaina. Kino’s journey makes it fairly clear that it does have philosophical nature in its episodes. Something that journey of Elania isn’t covering. There is a difference between the two; Kino is active in their journey. Personally Kino is not catching on me, it’s looking towards the drop zone.

Higurashi: When They Cry (2020)

The main cast of Higurashi

I haven’t seen the original or played the visual novel. So I’m going in literally blind here. From the first episode, damn!! it really sets the tone of the series, where you see a character just hacking away at another character, with no real context as to why that is. As I said, it sets the tone. I did feel the first episode is a slow one, which isn’t a bad thing as it introduces the main cast. Keiichi, certainly plays the unassuming character to a tee, especially regarding his close friends. Rena certainly seems to be the main focus here. There are small glimpses of something not being right with her. Despite she giving off this, well what I can best describe it as “sickly sweet” or being way too sweet. The quick flash of personality change does a good job as it unnerves Keiichi. And geebus, you call that a saw – it’s an oversized machete!!.

Episode 2 hints that something’s not right with Rika either. It does seem pretty interesting though as to what it could be, besides that. Not much really, to say on episode 2 as it slowly builds up the villages ritual to their deity and the mystery surrounding the murder of the damn worker. It’s not until episode 3, is where I really learn of the mystery and the supposed curse that plagues Hinamizawa for the past 4 years. It’s also revealed some interesting backstory regarding Rena. And flipping heck, talk about some 180 personality changes. From sweet to damn right unnerving. Not only that, stalking Keiichi Rena?. Damn girl. I’m certainly keeping up with it!!.

Scribble down, and I’ll catch you on the next post!
